Book of Shadows Privacy Policy

In short

Book of Shadows keeps what you write on your own device. There are no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. We do not sell, share or look at your data.

A few features reach the internet when you use them, and they are listed below. The only part of the Book that keeps anything on a server of ours is Find a Coven, and only what a group chooses to list there.

What stays on your device

Your spells, diary, dreams, recipes, database entries, pictures, contacts, tasks, research notes, settings and everything else you put in the Book are stored on your device only. Backups are files you save yourself, to a folder or place you choose. We never receive them.

If you give the Book your location for moon and sun times, it is kept on your device and used only for those calculations. The app lock uses your device's own fingerprint or face unlock; the Book never sees your fingerprint or face.

Deleting the app deletes everything it stored on your device.

Permissions

The Book asks for permissions only for the features that need them, and only when you use those features:

• Camera - to take a picture for an entry, a recipe or a find on the trail, or to scan a book's barcode.
• Photos - to add pictures you choose from your device.
• Contacts - so Magical Contacts can show, text or call the people in your own address book.
• Calendar - to show your upcoming events on the front page and, if you ask it to, to add sabbats, events and tasks to your calendar.
• Internet - for the features listed in the next section.

When the Book uses the internet

These features connect only when you use them. Each service sees the request the way any website sees a visit (including your device's internet address), and has its own privacy policy.

• Book lookup (My Library) - the ISBN or title you search for is sent to Open Library (openlibrary.org) to find the book and its cover.
• Witchy YouTube Content - the Book reads the public video lists of the channels shown, from YouTube.
• Kitchen Witchcraft inspiration and recipe import - the Book reads public recipe pages and feeds, and any web address you give it to import a recipe from.
• Links you open - free book sites, astrology sites, a group's public page and similar links open in your own browser, after the Book tells you that you are leaving it.
• What the hell is that? - hands your picture to Google Lens, at your request.
• Calendar link (computers) - if you paste in a calendar's private link, the Book reads your events from it.
• Update check (Android) - once a day, on Wi-Fi only, the Book asks Google Play whether a newer version is available.

Find a Coven

Find a Coven is a board of covens, moots, study circles, shops and open rituals, so you can find a group near you or where you are travelling. It lists groups only, never individual people.

Looking at the board. The Book downloads the whole list of groups and does all its searching on your device, using its own built-in list of towns. Our server never learns which town you look at or which groups you open. Nothing about you is sent or kept.

Listing a group. When you list a group, the Book sends what you type into the listing form: the group's name and kind, its town (chosen from a list - never a street or address), its path or tradition, its description, how and when it meets, who may join, and the addresses of its public pages (a website, Facebook page or Meetup page). It also sends a random key made by your Book, which proves the listing is yours to change or take down; our server keeps only a scrambled form of that key. No name, email address, phone number or account is asked for or kept.

Every listing is read by The Eclectic Witch before it appears on the board. If a listing is turned down, the reason is shown in your Book. You can take your listing down at any time from your Book, and it leaves the board at once. Listings last 90 days unless you renew them.

Reports. Anyone can report a listing that seems wrong or unsafe. A report sends only the reason chosen and any words typed in; it does not say who sent it.

Where it is kept, and for how long. Listings and reports are stored on Cloudflare's servers (cloudflare.com), on our account. A listing that is taken down, turned down or has run out is deleted 30 days later; a report is deleted 90 days after it is dealt with. When a listing or report arrives, its details are emailed to us so we know to look at it. Your device's internet address is used for a moment to stop floods of requests, and is not stored by us.

If you lose the device that made a listing, write to us at the address below and we will take it down for you.

Sharing and email

When you share a spell, recipe, entry or anything else, it goes only where you send it, through the app you choose. If you email us a suggestion or a translation at submissions@00theeclecticwitch00.com, we use it only for that purpose.

Children's Policy

We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, especially children. Our app is not intended for use by children. Groups on Find a Coven must be listed by an adult who runs or speaks for the group.
